Denzel Gives Out Some Washingtons!

The handsome megastar hit up Mr. Chow -- and not only did he give a homeless man $100, he also stopped to sign autographs for all the fans who crowded him. Not once did Denzel lose his cool despite hundreds of flashes going off in his face. When you've got swagger like this, drama isn't necessary! .

Politics & Elections

I think we've all had people who we've hired who in retrospect was a bad decision," he said, alluding to Bernard Kerik, Giuliani's disgraced former police commissioner who is under federal indictment on multiple charges.

Sen. John McCain, for whom the immigration issue has proved particularly vexing, defended his support for an unsuccessful overhaul of immigration laws that included a temporary worker program and a path to citizenship.

"We must recognize these are God's children as well," McCain said. "They need our love and compassion, and I want to ensure that I will enforce the borders first. But we won't demagogue it."

Mike Huckabee, who has also come under GOP criticism for some of his immigration policies while governor of Arkansas, defended benefits he supported for children of illegal immigrants, including allowing children to be eligible to apply for college scholarships.

Well, That's Done

It had been 99 percent clear Feliz wasn't going to get what he wanted from the Giants: a multiyear deal. And for many fans it has been 100 percent clear that they weren't going to get what they wanted from Feliz: A guy who was more patient at the plate.

So ends another disappointing attempt by the Giants to develop a good middle-of-the-lineup hitter.

His OBP in eight seasons? .288

But he could field, right?

Ottawa fires nuclear safety commission head

The federal government has fired the head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, days after she publicly accused Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn of interfering with the independence of the arm's-length watchdog. The former head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Linda Keen, says she will appear at a parliamentary committee about the reactor closure on Wednesday.(CBC)

"The president was aware of the importance of maintaining Canada's and the world's supply of medical isotopes," said the statement from Lunn's office.

"However, given the growing crisis, she did not demonstrate the leadership expected of the president under the existing legislative provisions of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act to put the commission in a position to address the situation in a timely fashion."

Lunn and Keen have been at odds since the 50-year-old Chalk River nuclear reactor was shut down in November, prompting a worldwide shortage of medical isotopes.

State briefs: Jan. 16

SWEETWATER - The Tennessee Highway Patrol fired a trooper Tuesday accused of taking money from a driver.

Michael C. McGlothlan, 31, of Sweetwater had served as a trooper for less than a year, according to the state Department of Safety. He patrolled in Monroe County, part of the Knoxville district.

McGlothlan's firing came a day after a driver claimed McGlothlan took cash from him during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 near Sweetwater, according to the Department of Safety.

"An investigation determined that the complaint was factual," spokesman Mike Browning said in a press release. The agency has turned the case over to prosecutors in the 10th Judicial District, Browning said.

McGlothlan won't be entitled to appeal his firing because he's served less than a year, Browning said.

Read this story about Amy's little angel in this week's Upper Cape Codder

Tragedy strikes family a second time By Robert Slager/ rslager@cnc.com A little angel has been whispering into Amy Johnson's ear every day since June 7. The voice of her little sister Kristen, forever frozen in time, is pleading with her to fight a little bit longer. "I know it's true," said Carol Henderson of Wareham, who lost one daughter to a car accident a decade ago and may now lose another. "Amy has injuries that you and I could not have survived." Amy Johnson, who moved from Wareham to Bridgewater just a few weeks ago, lost control of her car in the early morning and slammed into a tree near Exit 2 on I-495, suffering massive internal injuries. She remains in a coma in the intensive care unit of Brigham and Woman's Hospital.
