Across the Universe: 2-Disc Deluxe Edition (2008)
As a delivery system for injecting a new generation with Beatles music, Across the Universe is efficient as well as playful and ferocious much like the Fab Four themselves. The movie is almost an opera: plot primarily conveyed through song. And while Universe's thin 1960s-era romance never achieves the emotional complexity of even so ''simple'' a song as ''All My Loving,'' the film sure knows how to present that melody with an energy and visual invention that make you adore the tune all the more. We TV fans already knew that Universe's female lead, Evan Rachel Wood, had a beautiful voice from the few times she sang on the ABC series Once and Again. The rest of the lesser-known cast, meanwhile particularly Wood's romantic interest, played by Jim Sturgess have expressive instruments that only occasionally succumb to the Broadway-style belting that characterizes so many movie musicals.
K.J. gets overlooked, but shouldn’t
So I offered my services for a few hours today, since I'm supposed to be off. Ink-stained wretch to record-store nerd. Love it. I'll be keeping up with the blog on my laptop while I fulfill what once seemed a dream job for me — working in a record store (I didn't understand you weren't going to get rich working in such a store. Or anything close to rich). For an afternoon, I can spin tunes and sell some CDs, provided folks stop in between noon and 3:30, when my man got some relief coming in. And since Don's a big baseball fan and all, he's even offering a 20-percent spring-training/Braves-MIB discount on used CDs for one week starting today. Just mention the code DOB to the person behind the register. No kidding. See ya at the record store.
I'm a party girl - Lindsay Lohan
LINDSAY Lohan's wild ways have sent her to rehab and jail, but she says she still finds it hard to resist the urge to party. But the actor said she has had time to reflect on her mistakes. "I have it in me to go, go, go," the 21-year-old actor told Harper's Bazaar magazine. "When I look back on this last year, it's like, what was I thinking? I've learned so much, though, like learning to live my life a different way . . . and I wasn't taking the time to feel my feelings." The Mean Girls star said she had had time to reflect on her mistakes. But Lohan, who was shown on a video taking a swig from a champagne bottle while ringing in the new year in Italy, said it was hard to resist a party. "I'm still young," she said.
