That's why McCain is really not the best person to lead the attack. He's too volatile and prickly. If he comes off in the same way he came off in the Reagan Library debate, we're all doomed. So you have to find a VP who can do what McCain can't -- stay cool. Condi has been cool, and about much more pressurized opponents than this. The conventional wisdom has always been that you pick a VP to clinch an important but "iffy" state. I doubt that works anymore. Besides, Condi would make a worthy president on her own merits, and that's nothing to sneeze at. .
Johnson wins second Daytona 500 pole as Hendrick team rolls on
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - The Hendrick Motorsports juggernaut just keeps on rolling. Reigning NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson won his second Daytona 500 pole less than 24 hours after new Hendrick teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the checkered flag in the non-points Budweiser Shootout. Michael Waltrip, embarrassed last year at Daytona when his then-new team was caught in the post-qualifying inspection using an illegal fuel additive in his Toyota, also had a great run Sunday, taking the outside pole. Only the top two qualifiers locked in starting positions for next week's 50th running of the Daytona 500. Asked if this makes him the favorite to win the 500, Johnson said, "We have to wait until we get out in the draft and see how these cars work.
ASDA extend Kwik Cricket link
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced that ASDA will continue its title sponsorship of Kwik Cricket until September 2009. ASDA, who initially became an official sponsor in March 2006, will work in partnership with the ECB to develop and implement two major campaigns designed to use ASDA Kwik Cricket as a vehicle to educate children about the benefits of healthy living and also raise the profile of the sport within communities. A core element of these campaigns will involve the ECB, in conjunction with the 18 first-class counties, and ASDA establishing a series of recreational junior cricket festivals across the country. This will also include new girl's tournaments aimed at increasing levels of participation. These festivals will be attended by high-profile professional cricketers who, in addition to passing on coaching tips, will also talk to kids about the benefits of healthy eating.
Desperation pitch
But my guess is that these were just the sentiments of one star-struck congressmen. Committee chair Henry Waxman (D-CA) has struck me as a serious person, not some fawning fan. The same goes for Tom Davis (R-VA) and the rest of the other 40 who aren't Towns. If he thinks he can get a majority of congressmen to roll over for him, he should think hard about that. They already showed they are willing to play hardball with a star when they recommended the Justice Department investigate Miguel Tejada for possible perjury, who told them back in 2005 he never took performance-enhancing drugs and didn't know of anyone who did. In the end, the question isn't whether Clemens can act like a groovy guy in a meet and greet, or sign a few baseballs; it's whether an American hero perjured himself, which is serious business.
