Ghosts, legends, defunct companies

Welcome, readers, to our first ever Halloween-flavored installment of Ask the Readers.

Once again, I'm turning to you for hard-to-find answers to questions I've received. Some are pretty routine -- apple shopping, dish washing, pie baking -- but some are downright weird! We've got a ghost, a violet ray machine, a spooky house and a Monkey Man.

If you, or your fellow readers, can answer these questions we'll be in for a spooky column next week, just in time for Halloween. (See the end of the column for details about sending in your answers.)

Q: Does anyone know anything about the possible haunting of Valentine House, halfway between Rocky Mount and Ferrum? There was only a pile of bricks there where the house used to stand when I was a kid in the '60s.

Caught in the Act!

As their budding soccer star had a field day, Brad Pitt took son Pax, 4, to scope out backpacks. Pitt showed his son how to affix a water bottle to the bag as Pax tried one out for size. Later, the family reunited and continued browsing in the store. •Several days later, Pitt, in a grey fisherman cap, was spotted doing some business at West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont. The actor met over glasses of Perrier with his associates for just over an hour. • Miley Cyrus, visiting young patients at Sunrise Children's Hospital in Las Vegas after performing at the MGM Grand. During her time at the hospital, the teen sensation gladly posed for photos and signed autographs. • Also in Vegas: John Mayer, partying with a large group of friends at Tryst. The singer was spotted dancing around and shaking hands with guests.

Easy Come, Easy Go

Everyone wants to be healthy. Everyone wants to look and feel great. But most of us are too lazy to find alternatives for our carbohydrate-laden, swimming-in-ghee meals, or find the time to visit the gym and actually sweat our way to being fit. Wouldn’t it be convenient to just magically shrink into that designer dress or grow muscles to rival Arnold Schwarzenegger’s?

The appeal of taking a little pill, powder or potion that ‘magically’ does just that — with no effort whatsoever on our part — is devilishly tempting. Add to that the fact that these physique-altering drugs are sold dirt cheap and can be bought by a 12-year-old with no raised eyebrows or any questioning whatsoever, and the temptation becomes almost impossible to resist.

Supplements are anything taken to either make up for a deficiency or strengthen the body.

Tigers, Granderson agree to 5-year, $30.25M deal

The Detroit Tigers could have kept Curtis Granderson around for a while, retaining his talents with one-year deals until he became eligible for free agency after the 2011 season.

The Tigers, though, don't just wait around to make moves these days.

Granderson and baseball's busiest team agreed Monday to a $30.25 million, five-year contract that includes a club option for 2013 that could make the deal worth up to $43.25 million.

Not Worth The Shot?

HAMDI ALI IS three years old, and his PCR tests have shown high levels of active hepatitis C virus (HCV). His mother, a young veiled woman with Hamdis green eyes, finds it difficult to hold back the tears as she hugs her baby tightly. She has come all the way from Alexandria to the National Liver Center in Monoufia, one of the most reputable in the Middle East, to make sure the boy gets his interferon injections.

The doctor from the health insurance program in Alexandria refused to allow him the interferon injections, she tells us. He says he doesnt need it. But he does. The doctors here have been wonderful. They help us out of their own pockets. A zakat [charity] committee takes care of the bills, but the treatment is too costly.
