Generation distraction
The Upper Arlington teenager spends most evenings glued to her family's laptop computer -- sending instant messages; checking e-mail; and logging into Facebook, a popular social-networking Web site. At the same time, her iPod is shuffling through MP3 playlists, the television is providing white noise and her cell phone is buzzing with incoming calls and text messages. Keeping up with the multiple mediums takes work -- and time. "It's crazy," Kelsey said. "It'll be an hour, and I haven't even touched my homework." Besides providing an excuse to procrastinate, however, such multitasking -- increasingly routine among today's tech-savvy young people -- could be setting the stage for bigger problems. A growing body of research suggests that juggling various tasks at once might be driving kids to distraction that can hinder their psychological development.

That Old Kennedy Magic Ted Kennedy's roof-raising endorsement of ...
Sen. Ted Kennedy did not just endorse Barack Obama today; he passed him his brother John's baton, 45 years on, and bet the whole darn Kennedy Compound that this man is The One. Oh, and he performed a double vivisection on the Clintons as 6,000 cheered. The biggest applause line of the day came when Kennedy said that Obama fights for what he believes in, "without demonizing those who hold a different view." And unlike some he could name, what Obama is selling is "not just about himself, but about all of us," Kennedy thundered. He did not make his decision to back Obama instead of Hillary Clinton seem like a very tough call, given that the choice as he described it was between fear and hope, the past and the future, meanness and possibility. .
NEC FlexLoad: Downgrade easily from Vista to XP
Although Windows Vista has proven decidedly more popular than Windows XP, despite the negative feedback Vista has received from many quarters, there are many businesses that simply still need XP. In preparation for XP's discontinuation in July 2008, OEMs are preparing to offer those potential customers alternatives to the upcoming limitation of only being able to the purchase XP in 50+ quantities. NEC Computers has introduced NEC Flexload, a software solution aimed at IT administrators that allows them to downgrade rapidly and easily from Microsoft Windows Vista Business (the only edition that NEC supports the downgrade for) to Microsoft Windows XP Professional. The company explains that many networks are still running on XP; as long as they can remain within the law, NEC Computers is not about to lose potential customers.
Steroids testing debated
Texas looks to begin testing athletes next month, the result of a two-year, $6 million program approved by the state's legislature last May.New Jersey and Florida already do. So why not Oklahoma?Area coaches favor such testing, but they have one overriding concern — the cost."The problem is that it's so expensive," Muskogee football coach Matt Hennesy said. "Where would the funding come from, I don't know."Hennesy remembers when he was an assistant coach at Jenks and he said it cost $100 per test for steroids."If you figure 100 football players, you're talking about $10,000," he said. "(The cost) may have changed since then. I think it's great (to have testing). I don't see how anyone can afford it."According to a Fort Worth Star-Telegram article, the cost per test in Texas will be $175.
One family feels the economy's pinch
In late 2006, they bought a 52-inch high-definition television set and accessory package for about $2,600. It now provides the primary source of the family's entertainment, replacing expensive trips to the movie theater. They paid a contractor about $8,000 for a new kitchen countertop and cabinets, on which they pride themselves for getting a great deal. They enrolled their older son, Jerry, in a soccer program for a $50 fee, plus a $34 equipment package. "That wasn't in the budget, buying that," Christine Barnes, 33, says. "But he was so excited." In September, just before Christine gave birth to Cody, the Barneses refinanced their four-bedroom house on Club House Road, a raised ranch in a modest neighborhood not far from Lynnhaven Mall.
